Scientists created the liquid capable to store solar energy of nearly 20 years, life hack
Despite all potential of solar power, it has shortcomings too. For example, one of them is the high cost and low efficiency of long storage of energy. The industry is engaged in search of the solution of this question for a long time, and, apparently, on the horizon one very interesting idea appeared. The Swedish scientists developed the special liquid which is called heliothermal fuel. Its feature consists in ability to store collected solar energy within nearly two decades.
When need to use this energy arises, liquid is banished via the special catalyst which returns to molecules their initial form that leads to heating of liquid to 63 degrees Celsius.
It is possible to discuss news in our Telegram chat.
During tests researchers passed liquid through 125 cycles, at first heating it, and then cooling up to the usual temperature. No significant damages, for the molecules which are contained in it were noted.
The prototype of the power system installed on a roof of institute allowed scientists to carry out liquid test. According to researchers, the result of this check drew attention of numerous investors.
About this work four scientific articles are written already. The last from them is published in the Energy magazine & #038; Environmental Science.
"We achieved considerable progress lately, having received at the exit power system without harmful emissions, capable to work all the year round", & #8212; tells the ILO-Poulsen.
"Ahead there is a lot more work. We only showed that the system really works. Now we need to be engaged in more detail in each of its aspects, including optimization of design", & #8212; adds the ILO-Poulsen.
The idea is that this heat then can be used, for example, in the heating systems, water heaters, dishwashers, linen dryers and other types of devices then just to return it back on a roof for & #171; подзарядки».
The device for collecting renewable energy externally looks as a concave reflector with a tube in the "center" on which liquid runs. The design reminds a radio plate which monitors the movement of the Sun. Liquid is banished on a transparent tube in the "center" of a refletor and heats up sunlight owing to what molecules of a norbornadiyen as a part of liquid turn into the heat-insulating isomer, kvadritsiklan. Then liquid is just placed on storage in some tank at a usual temperature with the minimum loss of energy.
Inventors are not going to be satisfied with what has already been achieved. According to them, the technology can be improved in such a way that it will be able to make even more heat - at least 110 degrees Celsius.
"Heliofuel & #8212; it as the recharged battery, but instead of electricity this "battery" is charged by sunlight, providing you if necessary with heat", & #8212; Jeffrey Grossman, the engineer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology working with this material explains.
At the heart of the heliofuel developed by scientists from Chalmersky Institute of Technology (Sweden) special molecules from carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen lie. At impact on these molecules sunlight there comes reaction: there is an evolution of their atomic communications and at the exit isomer turns out. Strong chemical bonds between isomers take solar energy and are capable to store it even then when temperature of molecules decreases to room (about 21 degrees Celsius). When access to the kept energy is required, liquid is passed via the catalyst that returns to molecules their initial form. As a result of this process at the exit you receive energy in the form of heat.
"Energy in isomer can be kept up to 18 years. If necessary we can receive it in the form of heat, and in such volumes of which we could not even dream", & #8212; one of creators of heliofuel, the specialist in nanomaterials Casper Mot-Poulsen of Chalmersky Institute of Technology speaks.
According to developers, through a series of completions they managed to achieve that their liquid is capable to keep an equivalent of 250 W now · h/kg that by efficiency is almost twice more, than possibilities of Tesla Powerwall batteries.
